Residents of Cypress Village recently had the unique opportunity to explore the intersection of medicine and creativity through a guided tour of the Mayo Clinic’s renowned private art collection. Organized by the Cypress Village Visual Arts Group, the first of two planned excursions brought residents face-to-face with an inspiring blend of visual artistry and healing philosophy. There, they were welcomed by Chrys Yates and Liz Mattson of Mayo’s Humanities in Medicine Department, who led a thoughtful and engaging tour of the clinic’s impressive collection. Highlights included a massive chandelier by world-famous glass artist Dale Chihuly, composed of more than 160 vibrantly colored pieces, and an entire hallway lined with floor-to-ceiling stained glass depicting Florida’s flora and fauna in abstract form. Visitors also had a chance to visit the tranquil Meditation Room, a space designed for healing and reflection, open to both patients and staff. Beyond the art itself, the tour offered insight into the Mayo family legacy and the origins of the Mayo Clinic’s philosophy. Exhibits on Dr. W.W. Mayo and his sons illustrated how their vision grew into one of the most respected medical institutions in the world. Residents learned the meaning behind Mayo’s iconic three-shield logo, representing Education, Research and Patient Care — the three pillars that continue to guide the clinic’s mission.
